An Ancestral Origin in Mexico:
The history of the avocado (whose scientific name is Persea americana Mill) dates back thousands of years to what is now known as Mexico. Archaeological evidence suggests that the avocado was first cultivated in this region approximately 10,000 years ago, making it a fundamental part of the diet and culture of pre-Hispanic civilizations such as the Maya, Olmecs, and Aztecs.
For the Aztecs, the avocado, known as ahuacatl, was a revered fruit. It was not only prized for its delicious flavour and texture, but also for its nutritional properties, and in some cultures, it was even attributed with mystical and aphrodisiac qualities. It was used not only in daily meals, but also in ceremonies and as part of offerings.
From Mexico to the World:
With the arrival of European explorers on the American continent in the 16th century, the avocado began its global journey. The first written records of this fruit in Europe date from Spanish chronicles that described its uniqueness and flavour.
Michoacán is the leading avocado-producing state in Mexico and is known as the “green state” due to its vast expanse of forests and protected natural areas. In Michoacán, producers have access to a wide variety of climates and altitudes, which allows them to grow different types of avocado with unique flavours and textures that adapt to consumer preferences.
Avocado cultivation in Michoacán has a long history that dates back to the pre-Hispanic cultures of the region. The Purépecha, an indigenous people who inhabited the region before the arrival of the Spanish, cultivated and ate avocados, considering them a sacred food and a symbol of fertility. Since then, the avocado has been a key element in the culture and gastronomy of Michoacán.
However, its true international expansion began in the 20th century, thanks in large part to the development and popularisation of the Hass variety. To expand the avocado's presence in the global market, it's necessary to comply with certain requirements established by Mexico's Secretariat of the Economy for the product's export, allowing for a wider dissemination of its flavour and benefits in global nutrition.
The following compulsory standards are included:
- NOM-066-FITO-2002: It establishes the phytosanitary and movement measures for avocados.
- NOM-144-SEMARNAT-2004: It establishes the international phytosanitary measures for wooden packaging.
- International Phytosanitary Certificate issued by SAGARPA.
